Air Force Civic Actions Programs
Most
of the U.S. military units in Vietnam had corresponding programs to
work with the Vietnamese located near their bases. The Air Force had
a very large program. Their doctors, dentists, medical personnel, and
average airmen went into local villages to help with medical and civil
problems found in individuals and facilities. Individual squadrons had
charity and building programs in local towns and villages that they
took on with honest zeal. These started out as an Air Force programs
but I saw examples again and again of genuine concern and care by AF
personnel for their Vietnamese neighbors. There were on every base dedicated
individuals who really wanted and tried to help the local Vietnamese
in any way they could. This was one of the greatest and least publicised
operations going on in South Vietnam. It never made the nightly news.
