Science in the 1990s

During the 1990s science and technology really took off. Science was advancing very rapidly and technology was starting to get really technical. These advancements included things such as the first genetically reproduced sheep, Hubble telescope, and a new thing called the Internet. With all these advancements in technology kids were also introduced to the new thing called the Playstation and Nintendo 64.
In 1997 a scientist in Edinburgh, Scotland, created a sheep, which became known to the entire world as Dolly. This sheep was created from a single cell from an adult sheep. This practice called cloning was a major advance in reproduction technology. It didn’t take long for religious and political leaders to speak out against this practice. People thought that this would lead to the cloning of humans. Cloning could become a useful tool. Farmers could clone cows and sheep to produce more products for their consumers. Not only can cloning be useful in agriculture it could also be used in medicine. It can be useful in medicine for use in regeneration of damaged spinal cords, heart muscles, and brain tissues.
In the 1990s, scientists began to work on a project called the Human Genome Project. A primary goal was to determine the sequence of chemical base pairs, which make up DNA and identify and map the approximately 20,000-25,000 genes of the human genome. This project was estimated to take about fifteen years, but with technology rapidly advancing it only took thirteen. While scientists were focused on this project there was another major thing that was going to involve the entire world. It was called the World Wide Web (www) .In 1991 the Internet was now available to the public. This benefited people everywhere. Doctors help prevent heart attacks by using nuclear imaging and made everything a lot more organized. You didn’t even have to go to the store anymore because you can order things online. Kids were also introduced to new gaming systems. These systems had better graphics and 3-D game play. Technology was rapidly advancing.
In April 1990 the Hubble Telescope, a space telescope was carried into orbit by a space shuttle. This telescope had the capability of taking extremely sharp images with almost no background light. This telescope has led to breakthroughs in astrophysics. With these types of advancements in technology anything can soon be able to do. Technology today is still advancing.
The 1990s was a decade full of new things. Science helped save and entertain many people throughout this decade. Kids can now enjoy their spare time by playing video games. Science is a part of our everyday life. We see it everywhere. Without science we would not have the kind of technology we have today.
